Wildlife

From scarlet macaws to humpback whales, the Golfo Dulce region is one of the richest places for wildlife in Costa Rica.

Rainforest Wildlife

The forests around Pavones, the Golfo Dulce and the Osa Peninsula are home to all four species of monkeys found in Costa Rica: howler monkeys, white-faced capuchins, spider monkeys and squirrel monkeys. Two- and three-toed sloths, coatis, agoutis and anteaters are also frequently seen.

Deeper in the protected forests of Corcovado and Piedras Blancas live tapirs and wild cats such as ocelots, pumas and jaguars, which are rarely seen but remind us how wild this corner of the country remains.

Birds and Marine Life

  • Birds: scarlet macaws, toucans, the Baird’s trogon (found only in this region), hummingbirds, tanagers and many raptors.
  • Whales and dolphins: humpback whales visit the Golfo Dulce in season and dolphins can be seen all year.
  • Sea turtles: several species nest on the beaches of the area.
  • In the gulf: rays, tropical fish and, occasionally, whale sharks.

Watching Wildlife Responsibly

  • Go out early in the morning or late in the afternoon, when animals are most active.
  • Bring binoculars and walk quietly.
  • Never feed wild animals and always keep a safe distance.
  • On turtle nesting beaches, avoid white lights and flash at night.
  • A local guide will help you spot far more than you would alone.

Our concierge team can organize guided nature walks, birding outings and boat tours during your stay.
